PHOTO OF THE DAY: Meet Dumar AKA “Uncle Du.”

This guy, Dumar, better known as “Uncle Du,” is a fixture in Germantown. He has been working for the same clothing shop on Chelten Avenue for nearly 20 years….

I’ve had my eye on him for a while and finally caught up with him yesterday. I gave him my card, we chatted, he asked me if his hat looked okay. Then he proceeded to chomp on a bag of chips while I snapped some photos.

He told me that business on the Ave has been slow…which is sad, because you can literally see how Chelten Ave has been impacted by the economic downturn aka the Great Recession.

It’s amazing how everyday people are managing to keep or hold it together despite all of the negativity that swirls around us.

  1. It’s amazing how the face of a black man can tell his story without him even having to say anything. I love this image because he not only represents what a lot of people are feeling right now, but also the strength and resilience of people still holding it together just like you said. The Recession is tough and it’s hurting a lot of people. But, with people like this fella here, I can’t help smile and think “There will be better days because we’ll always have people like him!”

Cheers to inspirational photography, capturing history, and positivity!
